I usually cut things way back when they look ugly, too. However, in this
winter wonderland, I mulch with leaves and it is wise to leave stalks at
least 6 inches high to keep the wind from blowing all my leaves off the
garden. These stalks seem to serve as a barrier. We always have
adequate snow cover, so I'm not worried about that . . . just the leaves
blowing away. I do envy those of you who have to be on the lookout for
winter weeds . . . . . . the only thing that grows in the winter here is
one's waistline.
