I planted 2 aconitum this summer (one blue, one variegated). Unfortunately,
raccoons who are always digging things up in my shade garden got the blue one
(I keep looking for a corpse, but have found nothing yet). The other fared
quite well - 2 bloom stalks, foliage still green now, but next year will be
the real test. The site is very shady (about 1-2 hours of direct light, 1-2
of dappled and then shade) and quite dry (I've had problems with astilbes
curling up here). The soil quality is not very good despite some amendment (at
least according to my soil testing kit) Next year I'm going to lay down soaker
hose in this garden to keep the moisture content up. I was quite pleased with
the 1st year performance of the monkshood. I'm planning to buy 1 or 2 more
next year if this one makes a comeback.
