Re: Abelmoschus
Ginny,I planted from seed. They came into bloom rather late in my
area(and yours?)fall comes here early and day lenghth shortens quickly
and so of course the cool-down comes fast as well and then hard
frosts=few blooms...But so pretty if ever so fleeting.
Where are you located?Assume it to be more favorable to flowering, etc.
In terms of distance in Idaho, no the Sawtooths are not that far
away.Maybe 4hrs drive(its been a while so just guessing).Idaho is so
mountainous(scientifically refered to as the Batholith)that if ironed
flat it would be the second largest state in the Union (a little trivia
that should be close to reliable.)Horticulturally speaking while the
Sawtooths are a wonder to behold they make anything under a zone 3/4
unsuitable due to lack of hardiness. So I am delighted to say I am here
in the 'Banana belt',the s.w.of the state is the mildest; usda zone
6/Sunset 3...This is a highly agricultural area and farming is one of
our strongest economy factors.
Would love to know more about your growing location/climate,its always
interesting to compare notes...One last thought, since these Abelmoschus
are all Hisbiscus/Okra relatives it certainly gives one a clue as to
their needs:Heat, and as long a growing season as possible(tolerant of
less but performance perfection with what they really need). However
there are always exceptions to the 'rule'I.e.shorter season var.etc.if
your know of any let me know.
