Marie, Wait until your weather has turned cold and the soil temp has
dropped, then mulch the crowns of your perennials with compost. This will
keep the roots cold, the plants dormant and also help prevent frost heave.
If you mulch too soon, you keep the plants "awake" and growing. I have
buried plants in the compost pile for the winter and this seems to work well
too. I dig a hole and stick the pot right in there. The leaves are
starting to turn here and will be falling soon--its great mulch. Marilyn
