I ALWAYS wear gloves but not because of hand
vanity. I have three kitties who often think the new
soft earth is primo kitty litter, but MOSTLY because
nothing is more gross than running into a slug with
your bare hands!!!! Living in Oregon, we have
leviathan-sized suckers.

I don't have long nails, but never have-- I simply don'
like them.
I never wear gloves when gardening unless working
in really sloppy mud or
pulling blackberries or nettles.
I picked up one hint that helps a lot: before I got
out, I pull my
fingernails across a bar of Ivory soap (I suspect any
soap would do),
leaving a layer of soap under each fingernail. After
gardening, they wash
clean fairly easily. It works well for me....
