I don't have long nails, but never have-- I simply don' like them.
I never wear gloves when gardening unless working in really sloppy mud or
pulling blackberries or nettles.
I picked up one hint that helps a lot: before I got out, I pull my
fingernails across a bar of Ivory soap (I suspect any soap would do),
leaving a layer of soap under each fingernail. After gardening, they wash
clean fairly easily. It works well for me....
