Never cut back hydrangea because the flowers are set on last years growth.
Just trim it a little to shape. Mums and phlox can be cut back after they are
done flowering. Crocosmia I usually don't cut back. The iris looking leaves
just kinda of rot off. Crocosmia is a bulb and you need to leave the foliage
on the plant so it feeds the bulb. Crocosmia bulbs are not dug in the fall.
They need to winter over so that they will bloom next year.
