Well, it depends on the hydrangea:

   Hydrangea arborescens     late fall/early spring 
   Hydrangea macrophylla     after flowering 
   Hydrangea paniculata      late fall/early spring 
   Hydrangea quercifolia     after flowering 

H. macrophylla and H. quercifolia bloom on old wood, so if you prune
now then you won't have any blooms next year.
