RE: Cutting back perennieals

Neens:

I don't have much experience with the rest of the plants, but I wouldn't
cut back the hydrangeas. It is my understanding (from our state
horticulturist) that hydrangeas set their flower buds in the summer, so
if you cut them back, you'll cut off all next years' flowers. She
suggests that you only prune them either to remove dead stems or cut
back a few of the oldest stems to the ground to encourage new growth.
We had a late freeze this spring (actually, possibly the only one all
winter) after my hydrangea had leafed out, and it got nipped pretty
severely. Didn't have a single bloom. :-(
