How small is small??
Some great Hosta that I like to use to cover the ground include
Groundmaster,GinkoGraig, and any of the Tiara series (Grand, Golden, Diamond,
Emerald, Platinum, Amber)
The Tiara plants tend to be about 12" tall and 15-24" wide. They have a nice
rounded shape with their leaves covering the ground from the base of the
plant.
Other plants I really like are the Stoliniforous plants including any of the
neat splash/yellow splash series.
Plants are medium to small and form spreading clumps that fill in a good sized
area in a few years. they are very showy with large amounts of
gold/yellow/white on their edges on long narrow leaves. Plants tend to grow
into thick carpets--great ground covers. plus they have nice showy dark purple
flowers. the crowns send out a "runner" under ground up to 5" from the base of
the plant in all directions.
If you want a description of some of the mini and dwarf Hosta just ask--this
is another great group of plants. They grow 4 inches tall or less and again
grow into thick clumps, but they do not compete well with bigger neighbors so
are best suited to a "rock garden" or a bed of their own. Fun group of
plants.
The plant that I use for an edging is an old stand by-but not variegated
--Lancifolia: is a nice Hosta with glossy green leaves that cascade over each
other and cover all the ground under the plant. 'Chinese sunrise' is a
lancifolia that has yellowish leaves in the spring.
There are many more plants that might work--but I am trying to stay with ones
you can easy get.
