Planting of bulbs, and most other things for that matter, are often a
matter of personal choice as to their pattern. Probably the best thing to
remember is to generally avoid planting them singly. Doing so will avoid
having a "hole" in your planting scheme if a bulb is lost. . I generally
plant tulips and daffs in groups of 5-10 depending upon the size of the
flower and foliage. Lillies such as stargazer or Crown Imperial
(Fritillaria imperialis) are best in groups of 3 or more. If you are
planting to naturalize, consider planting your daffs. in drifts. Planting
in drifts was once described as standing with a handful of bulbs and gently
broadcasting them in the area where you wish to plant. Then just plant the
bulbs where they land.
