Here the name "Elephant's ears is the common name of Bergenaria, of
which I'm lucky enough to have a particularly early and tough clone.
It's just the common pink variety but it grows by my front door, under a
North Wall in a bone-dry situation and dust-poor soil, and it thanks me
for this with masses of big pink flowers all through February and the
beginning of March when colour is at a premium. Last year I counted
over two hundred flower heads - a passer-by thought I had a bed of
hyacinths there. I try to put winter flowers in the front garden where
I pass them every day and it cheers up other people as well.
