Dwarf pygmy barberry stays about 2 x 2, beautiful
all year, but quite a stand out in the fall. Powis
Castle and Valarie Finnis artemisias are both "front
of the border" plants in my garden and really light
up a dreary day.
There are also some dwarf asters - I have a purple
one that's called "Tiny Tot," definitely for the front of
the border.

I agree with using shrubs for fillers in the perennial
border, but there
are cases where shrubs just won't do. For
example, what could you use in
very front of a border that stays fresh looking?
Shrubs are too large.
Ground covers may be too small. I have a 'Blue
Mist' shrub (I forget the
Latin name) that blooms this time of year. It's rather
small and fits in
well in the middle tier of the border and I like the
blue flowers with the
russet tones of mums.
I would like to know if there are any perennials
whose leaves change color
this time of year. The dreaded purple loosestrife
will turn a gorgeous
shade of reddish orange; however, I guess this is
now a no-no in the
border. Any others?
I'm also now using some dahlias that come into
their own at this time of
the year. I just hate having to dig those things up.
Would much rather
have traditional perennials.
