Gee. Was it your tree? I was only kidding when I called it the "big bad
walnut". I didn't mean for the poor thing to die. I now feel somehow
responsible. Like I cast a spell or something. (Jeanne, did YOU have
something to do with this? Or do you limit your curses to Shasta Daisys?)
Anyway, I really don't know how long the toxins remain in the soil. They are
produced by the roots, and there are probably still plenty of roots in the
soil, but I would think that once the roots were dead the substance would be
gone. If there is someone on the list (a biochemist or plant pathologist
maybe?) who knows about the residual effects of phytotoxins in the soil, I
would love to learn about it, too. Last I heard there was not a lot of
research available on allelopathy.
Meanwhile, my guess would be that your plants will be fine where they are now.
