Re: Putting hostas to bed for winter

I think fall cleanup is easier than early spring cleanup. I have a huge
numbers of Hostas in a small city garden in solid shade most of the day. At
this time of the year I just let nasture take it course and let the leaves
die back to the ground.
Then I cover the areas with the leaves from my Elm tree (zelkova) and top
thaty with a light coating of mulch around the plants. That's all they seem
to need. Thr thing is you have to get that mulch off early or the snails
and slugs will get at the new leaves as they come out of the ground. I
suggest you wait till you get a good frost before adding the mulch on top.
