As soon as the foliage goes south. Remove it. Mulch beds with leaves or pine
needles. Big established hostas do not need mulch as much as young plants. I
am trying tissue culture plugs for the first time that is where we can buy
fire and ice for $10 instead of the $75 Shady Oaks is trying to sell it for.
New plant prices are all over town whereas older varieties are more uniformly
priced. Check at least 5 sources before purchasing and then have an idea of
maturity of plant and divisions usually send. I feel that it is much better
to buy mature plants when they are selling for around or under $20 especially
if they usually send more than one division then buy tissue culture plants
that might not make it and are very young 2" plugs that growers buy. But I
want those very expensive new plants and that is why I am willing to try to
grow tissue culture plugs. If you want more information get in touch with me.
