Supposedly you can plant container grown woody plants any time the ground
is not frozen. It is getting a tad late for them to be able to make a lot
of root growth before the ground freezes, but even in your zone, ground
should not freeze down very far for a couple of months. So, I'd go ahead
and get them and plant ASAP and mulch well to try to keep the ground
temperature moderated as long as possible so they can put on some root
growth. You could also try erecting a burlap fence right around the plant
to help protect it from winter winds. Be sure not to put mulch right
around the stem.
The latest edition of, I think, Fine Gardening, has a great article on
protecting marginally hardy plants over winter...hope I'm right there. If
it isn't Fine Gardening, it's Horticulture....both came in at about the
same time and I've been reading them concurrently, so am a tad confused.
But, one of them has the article! Very good article - worth the price of
the mag. for those who do not subscribe.
