The plants should be all right if they filled the one galloin container- the
root system would have stored enough "food" to grow new shoots, they are
tough little plants.
I cannot give a definitive answer on who/what eat your plants but if they
were in my growing area here is how I would tell.
If the plants were eaten all the way to the ground with some of the plant
even pulled up it was dear.
If the plants still have a few stems poking there way up out of the ground
but had no leaves on them it was the woodchuck.
