They do come up while the first 'early summer' plants are blooming and bloom late in
the fall. Oft-times, they'll bloom the second week of September in my garden and be
cut down a week later by the first Autumn frosts. These last three or four years
have been different...I've gotten at least a month's worth of bloom out of them
before they get frosted.
I think they prefer winter shade, too, in brown winter areas. They're in an area
that gets late afternoon sun, but is in total shade all winter long. I've never
been able to transfer them out into other, warmer parts of my garden...and not for
lack of trying. Those other areas get winter sunshine. B. grandis has somewhat
brittle roots and stems, and it apparently really objects to jostling during
winter's warm spells. Perhaps I don't add enough extra mulch or remove it at the
right time...I've got a little transfer to test that idea on. :)
