===>I think I read this one too fast, Marge. I don't have V. major; I've been told it doesn't do that well in the Cincinnati area. But you're diagnosis of the grass problem is right on. And isn't it amazing that when we have an area we want to cover with ground covers, it is the most aggressive grasses that persist. Well, I guess not so amazing after all--that's why we call them aggressive.
Again, may be the climate difference as I have several that seed. In
fact, my 'Excalibur' seeded without my knowing and the seedlings
managed to choke out the true form in one season :-( Seedlings have
large silver patches, but NOT the total silver leaf of 'Excalibur'.
===>P. 'Excalibur' has been in place here for many years--a lovely plant. While the mother plant continues to get larger and larger, it has never seeded. Actually it doesn't flower all that much for me.
I have not had courage to try this yet as it is said to loathe our
hot humid nights...and I do lust for this plant!
===>The variegated Brunnera is a lovely plant. Many people in this area have also have problems with it. I guess it's perfectly located in my garden, a happy accident. I have a small section that was a mound of concrete rubble. Rather than haul it away, I covered it with a foot or two of top soil and planted. Morning sun, afternoon shade, and this brunnera is at the edge of the downhill side. Maybe extreme drainage is the answer?

Agree with Claire....you need to sow seed thickly and they sprout
like mustard and cress just about anywhere...don't cover the seed;
just scatter it on top of the soil.
===>Looking forward to success with this. I saw a variegated form at the edge of Dan Hinckley's private garden when I visited Heronswood a couple years ago. Was told they'd like to propagate and offer it, but it hasn't happened yet.
