Hello Barbara,
Sounds like you may have seen a hummingbird moth. Pretty common here
among the flowers. I am too lazy this am to do a web search for you, or try
to locate one of my "bug books" for the Latin... not of much use, I am
afraid. Do look into hummingbird moth.
