I grow some of these too that may make it through the winter here but I try to keep a spare in a pot just in case. The monarchs came through in March this year which is very early for Blount County, TN, and ate my milkweeds to the ground too. I fretted over all the babies but now will have more seeds and a few more babies to pupae. In other words, the plants all survived the eating but your plants were not established? and your area gets colder than my zone 6b. Hope for the best anyway. I found some variegata in bloom on the roadside and planned to collect some seeds. I plan a lot every year but the road crew always cuts my plans off so no seed to start my own plants. I can not complain about the baby caterpillars since we just have not had the butterflies here in this area due to the cooler and wetter summer season. Next year the weeds will be explosive but hope the wildflowers and bulbs are too.

Nancy I transplanted the following Asclepias to my garden this year.Purpurascens, variegata and exaltata. I do not remember a lot of the deatils right now, just they were all recommended for part shade...open edge of thewood or a clearing. Variegata sounded the most decorative to look at. Allwere eaten to the ground, stem and all, before I got to see anything in the way of bloom. Seems to me those monarchs are eating themselves out of houseand home.... Gene E.
