It does need consistent moisture and it looked great for many years. I just waited a bit too long to redo the area. I hope they'll do well over winter in their pots. I have re worked the spot with sphagnum peat and I'm going to put some epimediums in there. Next year I'll pull the other two plantings of painted ferns and amend those areas.
That's the thing about gardens...they don't stay "done". But in many ways, that's also a good thing.

I had this too, and lost it.
