Great! This year I had one self sow (self-spore?) into a direct sun spot. Dug it and gave to a friend. These under the birch looked pretty pitiful, but I've seen worse-off plants bounce back w a little TLC so I thought they might be worth the effort. Thanks for the encouraging words, Gene.

Don't think you will have any problem with them bouncing right back. One of
the toughest plants out there. Have some that came up on their own in full
afternoon sun. they get burned out by July each year and come right back.
Been going on for some years now.

I have 3 areas rather close to each other planted with Athyrium niponicum
var. pictum. I'd guess I planted these 8 to 10 yrs ago. In the last couple
of years they all seemed to be struggling a bit, but I guessed it might be
because of the hotter-than-usual summers and competition from tree roots.
The batch closest to the birch had gotten so it couldn't stand up anymore so

I dug it up yesterday. Even though I'd thoroughly watered the area a few
days earlier, it was bone dry.

Anyway, on to my question. I potted each limp, dessicated plant up in nice
potting soil to overwinter for next year. Do you think these plants will
rejuvinate or do you think they're too old and have played themselves out?
