Overwintering perennials in pots

Hello from Sunny Southern California!

I have more questions about raising perennials in pots -- this time for
gardeners in cold winter areas of the world.
What do you do with your potted perennials in the winter?
When do you prepare them for winter?
How do you prepare them for winter?
How do you store them?
Do you water, fertilize, etc. while they are in storage?
When do you bring them out again and how do you prepare them for Spring?

Thanks a bunch, we are spoiled here in So Cal, overwintering perennials is
not an issue, so I have very little experience with this area of
perennials.

So goes an old chinese proverb:
         If you want to be happy for a few hours, get drunk;
         If you want to be happy for a week-end get married;
         If you want to be happy for a week, barbeque a pig;
         If you want to be happy all your life long become a gardener
