Re: Favorite late summer/early fall flowers

In zone 5/6, my favorites are the phlox paniculatas: 'Miss Lingard',
'David', 'Starfire', and 'Frans Schubert'. I have not had any problems
with mildew on this variety once I figured out that they need some space
around them for air circulation as our summers are very hazy, hot, and
humid here in the Ohio Valley. The white varieties, 'Miss Lingard' and
'David' are very floriferous and I thin those out a little by cutting a few
stalks here and there. The 'Frans Schubert' is not as vigorous as these,
and therefore I can pretty much leave it alone and it will give me very
fragrant lavender clusters with a maroon eye. I bought the 'Starfire' this
year and while it bloomed OK, I was disappointed with the color, which was
described as a deep red, but was more pinkish -- like a cherry red or hot
pink -- and I was expecting a red more like a monarda or crocosmia.

However, I read where the phlox maculata (meadow phlow) is supposedly more
carefree. The varieties 'Alpha' (lilac pink) and 'Omega' (white with a
deep pink eye) are described in Bluestone Perennials as being "very
resistant to any insects or diseases." Being that I almost always order my
plants from this company, I am very inclined to trust their abbreviated
comments.
