Re: avacado tree? bush? and daffodils

I know an avocado tree at a guest house in Key West that shades the second
floor of the house. Definitely not a bush.

Standard daffodils (as opposed to the miniatures) should be planted 6-8"
deep. If you get them a little too shallow they will correct themselves.
When you dig them to separate them years later you will often find them
considerably deeper than you planted them. Fall is the time to plant them as
they need to break their dormancy and put down their roots before hard
freezing arrives. Three inches would be too shallow and they might not
survive freezing at that depth.

Bone meal is not the fertilizer recommended by the American Daffodil Society
of which I am a member, accredited judge, and journal editor. We mostly use
a low-nitrogen fertilizer, the kind used for potatoes. Do put some in the
hole as that is your only chance to get fertilizer down there until you
divide them many years later. But put some soil over the fertilizer before
setting the bulb in so you don't burn the bulb. The Pacific Northwest,
Oregon to be specific, is home of some of the US's greatest daffodil
hybridizers. Those of us in Zone 6 in the midwest envy your your climate.
We are in such a severe drought right now that my hardpan is nearly
impenetrable at about four inches down. We grow a lot of daffodils in this
clay.

The one caution on daffodils is to not plant them in an area where you are
going to do a lot of watering in the summer (or that is naturally boggy).
Daffodils do not like wet feet in their dormant summer months and may rot on
you in those conditions. For example, a bed where you plant a lot of annuals
that you will water, or roses, would not be the best location for daffodils.
Enjoy them though. They have few pests and dstrength every year, and are
among the earliest spring flowers.
