Hi, I live north of Atlanta in 7b. Mulching here is done when the
pinestraw falls. Grass lives here year round with minimal dormacy, so we
must rake everything or else the grass dies. Of course plants in this area
are not too cold hardy so I guess it helps them. Our beds stay mulched year
round though just to retain moisture. I prefer bark, but with the amount of
free pine straw (and it doesn't float away in massive rainstorms), I'm stuck.
