Hello all,
I would like to ask a favor of you. I am an assistant professor at the
Center for Urban Horticulture (University of Washington, Seattle). I am
working on a project funded by the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI)
to determine if nursery customers are concerned about purchasing plants
with the ability to invade outside of cultivated settings. Many of you
might be aware that some garden plants have become invasive in natural
communities and may be impacting those communities. This survey will help
us to find ways that nurseries can voluntarily reduce the introduction and
spread of invasive plants.
If you have the time (it should only take a very few minutes), it would be
very helpful if you would fill out the survey and return it to me, either
by e-mail (put "X's" next to the appropriate answer) or surface mail. In
the interest of not clogging the lists, please respond to me directly,
rather than to the list. Your confidentiality is completely assured -
your name and e-mail address will not be released to anyone. The only
criterion for participation is that you shop at retail nurseries. Please
fill out the survey only once. I am aware that some of these lists
include people from other countries. While the project is mostly aimed at
finding solutions within the United States, it would be interesting to
compare responses from those outside this country. If you are outside the
U.S. and would like to fill a survey out, please feel free to do so,
noting your country in the space given.

responses in a timely way for HRI, I need to have the surveys returned by
October 15th 1998. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am

garden. Weeds can also invade in natural areas and create serious
environmental problems. Many garden and natural area invaders were
originally introduced as garden plants. Some weeds/invasive species are
prohibited from sale by state or federal governments but most are not.
This survey is intended to determine whether nursery customers would like
to be informed that a plant they are considering has the ability to become
invasive and how they would like the information to be presented. Your
participation in this survey will provide valuable information on this
very important issue.
