I don't think anyone answered your initial question as to why your
irises rotted. The usual problem is that people plant them too deeply.
The back of the rhisome (where it is white) should just barely be
covered with soil. The sun should be able to heat up the rhisome. Don't
put too much nitrogen in the soil and keep watering to a minimum.
