Lynn,
One other possibility to explain your rotting iris is iris borer. Small
nicks in the margins of the leaves are a sign of borers. If you poke a
sharp stick into the rotting rhizome, you can usually uncover the
culprit...a disgusting white grub-like beast about 1-2 inches long.
BTW, if anyone has a sure-fire way to get rid of borers (I do clean up
debris in the fall but it's not completely effective), please respond.
I've heard that injecting beneficial nematodes works but haven't tried it
yet.
