Re: hosta from seed

Nancy, that's not an embarrassing question! I used to ponder the death of my
Polemonium for days on end. As young plants, they seem to be more sensitive
to high temperatures and direct sun than when established. A few years ago,
even without afternoon sun, I lost all my white ones and many blue ones in
what I considered near perfect soil/light conditions. I moved what plants
were left to an almost fully shaded area and they've thrived (no more
afternoon wilting from heat/humidity).
I placed them beneath an aggressively growing red
maple tree. I planted this shade tree and love it but it's roots have almost
driven me crazy. The Polemonium haven't blinked an eye amid all those
selfish roots. They seem to enjoy the company of Heuchera, Aquilegia,
Anemone, Violets, Alchemilla and Digitalis, if that helps.
                                                             If you can get
your youngins' to a moist, well drained, shaded area that should do the
trick. Polemoniums are a great, trouble -free plant and they bloom spring
and summer if deadheaded!
