Re: strange things are happening

Not on purpose, Donna, but they are among the woody plants who will
occasionally root in water - you must have picked those just at the right
time:-)

As with anything that roots in water, it's best to get it into a potting
medium as soon as poss. as plants develop different kinds of roots in water
and in soil, plus, the roots get really tangled up when you take them out
of the water.

Now...what you're gonna *do* with them:-) First, if you can get them to
survive the winter (not always easy with newly rooted stuff; have lost a
number of hydrangeas to whatever as newly rooted cuttings), then you can
either pot them up or line them out for a year before planting them out -
at least a full growing season, I should think, esp. if you have a hard
time getting water to your garden. I'd pot them up as it is easier to
provide sufficient water for them. Set them outside in the shade until
frost makes them drop their leaves and go dormant. You can then keep them
in a cool, shaded spot in the house if you have no plunge bed or cold
frame. Only problem with keeping them in the house is that they will wake
up in early Feb and need a lot of light until they can be set outdoors
again. They do not need a lot of light when dormant and it's best they are
kept as close to 40F as you can do, so they don't wake up in dead of
winter.

I always think of Mississippi as being a hot state, but you say z.7...do
you have severe winters?
