I am not to excited about this practice-soil will cause microbe activity and
O2 depletion in the water and rotting of the roots. It might work if you used
clean sand.
For most plants the best medium for rooting is a mix of pealite and peat or
pure sand.
You want the medium to be moist and have good "air" circulation-roots need
oxygen for good growth.
