While periwinkle is lovely, especially when in bloom, later in the season
it takes lots of weeding. English ivy, on the other hand, does seem to
keep out interloping vegetation. Another big plus for English ivy which
the drought has brought to my attention is its apparent low water needs.
We have not had a measurable rain since sometime in June yet the ivy is
alive and even thriving. On the other hand, my periwinkle looks so bad
that I've finally broken over and put the soaker hose to it, in spite of
voluntary water restrictions in our county.
