Re: Great Plant Arisaema $$$

Hello Nan,
Believe it or not, there really is a reason for those prices besides greed.
One is supply and demand. More demand than supply until very recently. They are
just catching on with the general gardening population in the last few years.
Before that it was mostly the collectors who had Arisaema in their gardens.
In general, it takes one year to germinate seeds, another 3 to 5 to bloom.
Most nurseries who have tubers from seed grow them for 2 full years before
selling. That is 3 years of time placed into each tuber sold, minimum. First one
must obtain the seeds from someplace. If it is from your own stock plants you have
another 3 to 5 years behind the three I just mentioned. If divisions are sold from
offsets from the mother plant you have to have mature plants for a minimum of
about 3 years or more to get those offsets. Plants can only be divided about every
3rd year.
Things are beginning to change. China is digging up every hill and dale and
selling their wild plants for US dollars.. including Arisaema. Tissue culture is
beginning on these in Holland. More tubers are being field grown in 3rd world
countries as cash crops for the nursery trade.
What species do you have your heart set on?
