Barb-
I heard similiar theories about the compost on top verses the &*?#$ soil on
bottom which would prevent the plants roots from growing deep. With this as
a concern when we planted our azaleas around our live oaks, we used the
method of double digging and amended the soil in each hole well below each
plant. We planted rather small plants two years ago and they have done very
well.
Would the compost's nutrients "steep" down into the &*?#$ soil with rain or a
good watering?
There must be a bug in the air..I think 1 out of every 20 homes had dirt
delivered this past weekend. Newspaper corners were sticking out from under
the newly prepared bed and pots and pots of plants were lined up ready for
their homes....:o)
