Couldn't you use diatomaceous earth? I thought that this stuff, when
spread around the hostas, will prevent the slugs from trying to cross over
it because it is sharp to their soft, slimy bodies and will split them
open. Kinda like us trying to walk on broken glass.
I've used it when the snails/slugs were especially bad, and it worked just
fine. I had to reapply it after a heavy rain, but I had no more damage.
