There was a recent thread on this on another list regarding
dogs--diatomaceous earth is very bad for dogs/cats/or other pets that might
sniff it up. It can then damage their lungs. Just a warning for the pets
(who cares about the slugs!) My sister-in-law used pecan shells for a
mulch and has had good luck keeping out slugs because of the broken shell
edges.
