If you still have green stems, then it's entirely possible that the leaves
have been eaten by something. This happens to me regularly during the
summer and it's quite a nasty shock when you first see it. One year I
dusted mine with the stuff I use for my roses and it seemed to take care of
the problem. Generally though I just leave them alone and they come back.
If the stems are brown as well, then I would guess you have some dead
columbines. Too much shade is as likely to kill them as too little. Up here
they like about a half day of sun, preferably morning. I water them every
two or three days, but lightly, if they are planted close enough to the
house for the hose to reach. Otherwise they just have to tough it out. Like
most perennials they seem to like that semimythical moist but well drained
soil.
