Hi, Louise:
We just encountered the very same situation as yours and the euonymous is
about the same age and approx. 4'x4' and on the foundation of our house. We
spaded them out with about a 14"x14" root ball, squeezed them into beds that
could take them and watered well and often...they never batted an eye.
They're now back home and one would be hard pressed to ever know they'd ever
been moved. Somehow I think root pruning can be of benefit to these loyal
shrubs - they've put out new growth and seemed to have enjoyed their brief (1
month) holiday. As a matter of fact, they
look to be in finer fettle than their non-traveling neighbors. Also, we did
this in our semi-drought and very hot weather at mid-July.
Hope this helps - I would never worry again about moving them.
