At Shaw Arboretum we have really reduced Japanese honeysuckle by
spraying dense patches in late spring with 1 & 1/2 to double
strength RoundUp. Prescribed burning also sets it back. As in your
case, this is hardly our worst exotic weed. We have a Ligustrum and a
bush honeysuckle that are far worse, and don't like fire much, but in
dense stands, into which fire won't penetrate (too damp, too little
fuel), we cut them low and paint the stumps with herbicide. 50%
RoundUp works when they're actively growing, i.e. spring and summer,
but not when it's droughty. 2,4D or Garlon also work, the latter even
when it's cold, which is certainly nicer working conditions for
brush cutting.
The Society for Ecological Restoration is meeting in Austin next
month. There will be lots of people there to share their war stories
in the battle against exotics.
