I attempted to grow Burr and Northern Red oaks by fall planting acorns in a
nursery bed--first planting was washed out by a spring flood and the second
year squirrels discovered the bed and went down each row excavating every
acorn(do they locate them by smell?).
Since those experiences, I've been planting in cardboard paper towel tubes
filled with peat-based potting mix, placing the tubes in a cold frame for
the winter, and planting out the seedlings (tube and all) in late May or
fall. Mortality rate is nearly zero. The only problem I have now is
rabbits pruning the top growth during winter.
