Cacalia atriplicifolia

Hello ! I am new to this list and I have a question concerning pale indian plantain ( Cacalia atriplicifolia ).

I ordered seeds of Cacalia atriplicifolia from Prairie Nursery and from Prairie Seed Source in 1996, and this past summer plants from both sources bloomed. I was a little perplexed to see that the stems of the plants from Prairie Nursery ( PN ) were reddish -brown, while the stems of the plants from Prairie Seed Source (PSS ) were pale green. Otherwise they looked just the same-in regard of leaf-formation, flowers, bracts and so on.

In the books I have where pale indian plantain is described, the stems are pale green in the pictures, except for "Wildflowers of the Southern Mountains" ( plate 518 ) where they also have a slightly reddish-brown hue, which the plant shown in the PN 1998 catalog also does.
Can stem coloration vary within this species depending on the strain, or external factors like growth place ? It's probably genetic though, as I grow the plants only a few yards from each other in my garden.

Has anybody else encountered pale indian plantain with different stem coloration ? Would they be considered varieties of the same species ?

Also which one of  Cacalia and  Arnoglossum is the appropriate scientific name for this species according to current nomenclature ? I have found it under both names in my litterature. Arnoglossum being used more in the newer titles.

Hope to hear from somebody ! Sincerely,
                                                                               Paul
