There is individual variation in both stem color and whiteness of the
underside of the leaves which occurs naturally in this species, just
as there is genetic and phenotypic (appearance) variation in all
healthy biological populations. Always remember too that plants don't
read the books, so they don't always know how they're "supposed to"
look.
Arnoglossum is the currently accepted name for the genus including
this and related species. There is a lot of "new-fangled" research in
plant classification going on which results in new understanding of
what's related to what, or not, so numerous name changes have been
or will soon be proposed. This is nothing new. Look at a wildflower
guide or tree guide from 50 years ago, and many names for common
species will not be recognizable. Science is not Truth, only current
understanding.
