intro

After 24 years in the Army we have finally settled down. My husband and I
have recently bought 14 acres of former farmland in middle Tennessee about an
hour south of Nashville. Mountains and forests are magnificent, the ocean is
powerful, and the desert is spiritual. But there is something about a vista
of chest-high grasses undulating with the slightest breeze that soothes my
mind and heals my soul. I had an interesting volunteer experience as a Fish
and Wildlife tourguide on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal north of Denver. That
was where I came to appreciate the fragile beauty of native prairie. On the
land that we have chosen to care for we will attempt to heal the earth with
natural means. I intend to increase the woodland to about 1/3 of the total
acreage. The area around the house, gardens, and work areas will be
landscaped lawns. The rest will be "prairie." I am looking forward to
guidance and encouragement from the more experienced members of the list.
