We have 40 acres in Wisconsin of which we have put 11 in CRP as prairie
restoration. In the CRP point system you do appear to get more points for
prairie restoration. As I remember, the forestation was even higher with
the added potential benifit of getting CRP for 15 years instead of ten. CRP
subsidizes the cost of the seed [or trees] as well as helping with the
planting. One of our fields is all grasses and the other is grasses and
forbs. All of the seed that was used was native to the area - which took a
little doing as there was a high demand. Selection is also based on types
of soils, proximity to certain areas such as wet lands, and the bid [the
amount of money you want for CRP payments].
The only problem is waiting for results - cutting weeds for two to three
years until the real stuff appears in quantity.
