Mike,
Blackwell switchgrass was a formal release by the USDA Plant Materials
Center in Manhattan, KS in 1944. It's origin is from native collections
around Blackwell, OK. You may be able to find more information by contacting
the Manhattan PMC.
I can't tell you how to tell Blackwell from native if in two distinctly
different locations. However, any cultivar will exhibit these general
characteristics, a majority of the plants will: bloom at nearly the same
time, be approximately the same height, seed mature at approximately the
same time, produce more seed, only more or less so than native and/or
produce more vegetation. Whereas native stands will be variable in height,
bloom and maturity. There will be genetic variations expressed within a
cultivar population which will be an exception to the rule, but should only
show in a minority of the plants.
The best advice I can offer is, if you can verify plants of known origin,
and then compare you might be able to tell some differences. Local genotype
plants may have finer or coarser leaves, grow taller or shorter, etc. You
must be careful about making generalizations though, environmental
influences could affect outward appearances.
