I Have the butterfly weeds also covered in aphids. I use a strong
stream of water every once in a while and blast them off. They always
come back. But do not poison the plants as this would also kill
butterfly and hummingbirds coming to feast on the nectar.
When the Monarch's laid their eggs on the plants I picked them off and
also a lot of inconspicuous leaves and put them altogether in an insect
carrier. In a couple of weeks I hatched out 9 beautiful monarch's which
I released again to complete the cycle of life. Of the ten I had nine
hatched and one cocoon is still hanging in the roof there, does anyone
know if there is a way to tell if it is dead or just dormant? It was the
usual light green and gold and changed to the dark color from which it
would have hatched in a day or so. But the guy has been there for going
on a month! Will it wait until spring then?
