Laemmle color
Mike-I believe that is what Helmut Laemmle did,"fix the red gene",in New
Jersey,in the 1980s.See the Laemmle interview in AGGC,he reports "a
beautiful orange color".Is that the red gene?
He saved his seeds from the largest each year and grew from them the next
year.
As far as I can tell there is only one Laemmle seed(that's 1 seed from 1 AG)
that has survived to the present time. What a loss in all those other 609
seeds!
567.5 Mombert 92--616 Holland 91 x 609 Laemmle 89
Is not that 1 seed that Mombert grew responsible for most of the orange/red
in our modern AGs??
I say most since there have been other orange/red AGs but they have not had
the influence that the 609 has had in our top 2001 fruit.
Anyway that is my impression.--AE

George Websters has a tape that have 2 experts in the field from a seminar
in Oregon. One of the most interesting things one of the speaker points out
is we could fix the red gene. That the red is dominate over green. Takes
time . But could be done. You also can fix the dark green. Seems that
either side doesn't want the " mixed" . But lets face it our breeding has
been you take what you get or have available at the time of pollination that
as far as the plan goes. Our breeding plan in the past have been focused on
just weight. And we have created a lot of mixed colors. I think were
entering a new era where we can get both heavy and a pure color....MB
